Chrysler Computer Systems
Chrysler was the first car manufacturer to use an electronic control module to control basic engine operations. They tried several different computer configurations over the years and as a result have several different design. The various systems are listed below:
Electronic Spark Control (Lean Burn)
Application: 1977 - 1988 Cars & Trucks

Location: Engine Compartment

These units only controlled the ignition timing. This system was eventually designed to include a Power Module (located behind the right kick panel) and a Power Module (located in the engine compartment)

Single Module Engine Controller (SMEC)
SMEC Applications: 1987 - 1989 Cars & Trucks

Location: Engine Compartment

This design replaced the Logic & Power Module design by installing both units in one case. It used two connectors a 60 pin and a 14 pin. The next design combined both module boards and was called a Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC). SBEC Applications: 1990 to present

Powertrain Control Module (OBDII)
PCM Application: 1995 to Present

Location: Engine Compartment

These units are programmed electronically via the OE scan tools. They are repairable under the R&R Program.
