Some of the most common fuel injection problems involve contamination, leaks, low pressure, electrical failures, and control system failures. Let’s examine some of causes, symptoms and cures for these conditions.
Contaminated Injectors
Gasoline being produced today has several additives blended in that prevent olefin or wax type material from collecting in the injectors but, over a period of time even the best fuels will leave deposits in the injector passageways. Every time you shut the engine off the heat dissipation from the engine heats and vaporizes the fuel that is left in the tip of the injector. As the fuel vaporizes it leaves behind deposits that will eventually restrict the fuel flowing from the injector. The end result is a lean misfire and a rough idling engine. This condition can usually be remedied by running a cleaning agent through the system. If cleaning doesn’t remedy the symptom the injectors will need to be replaced.
Contaminated Intake Systems
Carbon and varnish deposits will eventually coat the inside of the air intake passages. This build up on the interior walls will restrict the air flowing into the engine and upset the air fuel ratio required for a smooth running engine. Even a carbon coated throttle plate can cause drivability symptoms. The intake systems should be inspected and cleaned if this condition is present. The plenums can be removed and cleaned in solvent. We provide the necessary replacement gaskets to complete this repair. A power fuel cleaning system can be used to correct the condition without removing the plenum housing but, cleaning solvents should not be allowed to flow through the mass air flow sensor as this can cause damage to the sensor.
