Topic: What diagnostic steps should your customers know?
Electronic Module Replacement
Have your customers performed the following tests before they replace the ECM?
  • Available voltage (check at the battery with the engine running 13.8 - 14.2 volts)
  • Clean the ground terminals at the computer and clean the battery terminals.
  • Check the reference voltage signal at the sensors with a DVOM (usually 5 volts).
  • Check for opens or shorts in the sensor-ground circuit at the ECM terminal.
  • Check for diagnostic trouble codes with a scan tool (repair as necessary).
  • Test the output devices for proper resistance and current draw.
If the above tests are performed and everything tests OK, but the diagnosis still leads to the ECM you can be pretty confident that replacing the ECM will solve the problem. Performing these tests will reduce the possibility of your customers returning electronic modules for a refund.
Proper Handling of Components
When handling electronic components, make sure the work area and you are grounded. This will prevent electrostatic discharge from entering the replacement ECM and damaging the solid state components. The packaging is treated to reduce the possibility of electrostatic discharge. so, keep the replacement computer in the box until you are ready to install it. Place the used computer in the box for core return. Follow the instalation instructions and precautions that come with the replacement PCM.
