| Misdiagnosis |
|
|
Computer failures fall into several categories, but the main reason for ECM replacement is MISDIAGNOSIS. The reasons for misdiagnosis could be, a lack of system knowledge, improper diagnostic procedures, or a lack of reference material and testing equipment. In order for your customers to solve computer controlled related problems they need the following.
1. An understanding of computer control operation.
2. A service manual or reference material for the vehicle in question.
3. A scan tool that can read diagnostic codes and the data stream.
4. A DVOM to test circuit conditions and measure the amp draw on output devices.

Without the proper tools and knowledge it is easy to come to the wrong conclusions. This can lead to improper replacement of the ECM. If the ECM replacement doesn't repair the vehicle symptoms, the customer will likely return the unit for credit.
If the customer doesn't follow proper guidelines he can easily damage the ECM during installation or testing. This is a real loss for all concerned because one, the car hasn't been repaired, and two, a perfectly good ECM has been damaged.
BWD Automotive provides a customer service number (US: 561-989-3755 Canada: 905-669-4812) that you or your customers can call and get free technical advice if they have any questions about testing and replacing our ECMs. |
