Replacement Recommendations Your customers may ask, “Should I replace the entire set of injectors or only those that have failed”? The choice should always be given to the vehicle owner but they need the facts in order to make an intelligent decision.
If the car’s mileage is high (100,000 plus) recommend replacing the entire set. The reasoning behind this recommendation is to ensure smooth engine idling and maximum fuel economy. The original injectors will be equally worn out. If some are cleaned and reused they might be delivering 10 to 20% more fuel than the original spec called for. The PCM can compensate for this by adjusting the Long Term Fuel Trim (reducing the length of time the injector is pulsed). If you replace one or two failed injectors with new injectors then those cylinders will be receiving 10 to 20% less fuel than all the other cylinders. The result may be a rough idle that cannot be corrected, a lean misfire condition, and excessive emission levels.
Remember, fuel injectors are precision components and they must perform to exacting specifications to achieve the desired performance goals.
Fuel Rail Contamination Inspection
You should also make your customers aware that the fuel rails need to be inspected for contamination such as rust or corrosion. Loose particles in the fuel rails can become dislodged and wind up in the inlet filter screens of the injectors. This clogging can result in poor performance and perfectly good parts being returned as defective.
